Spanish Military Drill Image Falsely Linked to “Staged” 2026 Hantavirus Evacuations
The Claim
A photo circulating widely on X,[1] Instagram,[2] and Threads[3] claims to show hantavirus evacuations aboard a cruise ship being secretly filmed,[4] with conspiracy posts alleging the health response was staged.
The image shows medical personnel in full protective suits transferring a patient on a biocontainment stretcher from a ship onto a dock. In the background, a man dressed in plain clothes appears to be filming the scene, which users online claimed was evidence that the outbreak response was fabricated or orchestrated.[5]
Posts sharing the image framed it as proof that the May 2026 hantavirus situation aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship was a “hoax” or coordinated public health operation designed to mislead the public.
What CyberPoe Verified
Verification shows the image is unrelated to the 2026 hantavirus outbreak and does not depict real evacuations from the cruise ship.
Reverse image analysis traced the photo back to official materials published by the Port of Almería in Spain. The same image appeared in a May 7, 2025 report documenting a joint maritime emergency preparedness exercise involving the Spanish Navy and the country’s health ministry.[1]
Original Context of the Image
The photograph was taken during a controlled training simulation designed to replicate the arrival of a vessel carrying suspected Ebola cases.
The exercise involved the transfer of a patient under strict biosafety protocols, including the use of full personal protective equipment and specialized containment stretchers. Officials emphasized that the drill was part of routine preparedness planning for high-risk infectious disease scenarios.
Additional images and video footage from the same event were later published by local Spanish media outlets from multiple angles, all confirming that the scene was a staged training exercise and not a real emergency.
Why the Misinterpretation Spread
The image gained traction online amid rising misinformation surrounding the hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius, where several infections and fatalities were confirmed among passengers and crew.
As with previous global health events, conspiracy narratives quickly emerged claiming that public health responses were staged or manipulated. The presence of media personnel in the Spanish training exercise was misinterpreted as evidence of coordinated filming of a real crisis.
Health authorities, however, have consistently stated that the hantavirus risk remains limited, and no evidence supports claims that the outbreak response was fabricated or orchestrated.
Public Health Context
The hantavirus outbreak under monitoring in May 2026 has so far resulted in three confirmed deaths globally. Health officials have emphasized that the overall public risk remains low and that containment measures are precautionary rather than indicative of a global emergency response scenario.
The outbreak has nonetheless triggered misinformation similar to patterns seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, including claims of “staged pandemics” and deliberate mass control operations.
CyberPoe Verdict ❌
False Context.
The viral image does not show staged hantavirus evacuations. It was taken during a 2025 Spanish Navy and health ministry training exercise simulating a suspected Ebola outbreak response.
There is no evidence linking the photo to the 2026 cruise ship incident.
